Galusha claimed to be age 104 in 1931, but according to family Bible records, he was born in 1837. The following information was taken from his obit published in the Pasadena Star-News, Monday, April 13, 1931. (The information provided for this obit by his sister-in-law, Mrs. Alice E. Slate-Eaton is INCORRECT in several places.) "Mr. Cole, almost 104 years and eight months old, passed to his reward from pnemonia brought on by the fracture of his left hip in a fall on April 3.... Mr. Cole was raised a Master Mason Mar. 4, 1882 at Richmond, Ind., where he was superintendent of music in the public schools....Rev. Albert Cole, father of Galusha M. Cole, was born in Stonington, Conn., in 1803. He was a Baptist minister riding a circuit of country churches. In 1824 he married Louisa Woodworth at Fenner, NY. Their son Galusha was born on a Connecticut farm in Tolland Co., on Aug. 15, 1826, during the presidential administration of John Quincy Adams... He attend Trent Academy, Mexico Academy, Fairfield Seminary, and the Normal School of Music. He was a teacher of music at Beaver Female Seminary in Beaver, PA, Clinton, MO, Holden, MO, and the State Normal School at Warrensbury, MO. He tour with A.N. Johnson, singing solos and playing music. He married Susan P. Slate in Chicago, IL in 1864. In 1875, he and Theodore Pressor formed the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA). He moved to Pasadena in 1891. He was director of the choir of the First Methodist Church....Mr. Cole was believed to be the oldest living Knight Templar. He was a charter member of Pasadena Commandery. A most unusual tribute was paid the aged man on his 103rd birthday by Knights Templar throughout California at the Masonic Temple, when he received a handsome embossed binder with a fitting inscription in gold, at the hands of the Knights....At that time greetings were extended Mr. Cole by letter and telegram from former President Taft, Henry Ford, former President Coolidge, Andrew W. Mellon, and the Governors of California and Connecticut." (This obit goes on to say he had no children. While it is true that he did not have children with wife Susan, he was married (1st) to Rhoda Parcel on September 28, 1856 in NY by whom he had two children, Charles and Mary. The obit also says he was one of twelve children. His parents, Albert & Louisa, had only three children -- Galusha, Mary Elizabeth, and Gustavia E. His father, Albert Cole, was one of twelve children.) Galusha is my great great grandfather. His lineage is documented in DAR and Colonial Dames.
