A. J. Reusswig, Office Chief, noted Hiker
Albertus J. Reusswig, 76, of 1631 Bennet St, for more then 30 years office supervisor of the local office of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and well known outdoor life enthusiast, died Dec. 27,1958 in Faxton Hospital after a brief illness.
Mr. Reusswig was born in Utica, Nov 28,1882, a son of the late Ernst William and Mary Sittig Reusswig. He was educated in the Utica schools and attended Cornell University for one year. Most of his business life was spent in the insurance field. He entered the employ of Metropolitan Life Insurance Company as an agent in 1913. He was promoted to the post of chief clerk in 1917 and in 1923 became cashier and office supervisor. On occasion of his retirement some years ago he was accorded a testimonial dinner and was presented a retirement certificate and service medal and purse. Mr. Reusswig was interested in hiking and in 1921 became a member of the Utica Tramp and Trail Club. His enthusiasm for hiking and his keen interest and knowledge of New York State places of interest won him early election to the presidency of the club and in succeeding years he frequently was nominated and re-elected to the office. He liked to travel but preferred to go on foot and looked upon a jaunt to White Lake as merely 11 hour walk. He was familiar figure on country roads walking at the head of a group of pedestrians and carrying a walking stick. In an interview some years ago Mr. Reusswig recalled having climbed 56 mountains in his explorations of high places and said that he had climbed Mount Marcy three times. He was a member of ADK, Adirondack Hiking Club. He was proud of his alumni membership in Phi Delta Sigma, a fraternity of Utica Free Academy students. He also held membership in the Metropolitan Veteran's Association. His wife was the former Clara Wester, whom he married in New Hartford, Jan18,1913.
Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Mrs. William J. McCambridge Jr., Binghamton, N.Y. and Mrs. Alert Guild Zink, Scotia, N.Y. a sister Mrs. Herbert Johnson, Kernersville, N.C. and 4 grandchildren, John, Judith, Nancy, and Carole McCambridge all of Binghamton, and several nieces and nephew and cousins.
