"Fairfield Ledger", December 24, 1868

For the Fairfield Ledger.
DIED.--- At Fairfield, Iowa, Dec. 14, 1868, Sophia H., wife of Rev. A. S. WELLS, aged 63 years and 6 months. Her disease was the second stroke of paralysis.

As she never recovered her consciousness, she was unable to give the parting salutations of an affectionate wife and mother or an assurance of her triumph over death in the last conflict, by the faith of Jesus. But the latter we may draw from her life. For more than forty years she has been a member of the visible church. She chose the society of God's people, searched the Scriptures daily, and loved God's worship in all its forms. Of late she had felt an unusual interest on the subject of personal religion, and in all the special means employed to promote the piety and fruitfulness of the church.

Although she was not as active a christian worker as she would have been if she had not been hindered by a mistaken apprehension of the text--- "Let your women keep silence in the church" --- yet we cannot doubt that she received and rested upon Christ as the Rock of her Salvation and her only foundation of hope, or that she died in the Lord, and therefore sleeps in Jesus. Her death, although sudden and unexpected to all, was an easy one; and she will be greatly missed, not only by her bereaved companion and her affectionate children, but by a wide circle of her acquaintances and friends. May it lead us all to get ready to live only to the Lord, and then we shall be sure of a happy death and a glorious immortality. Com.

Update a/o January 2, 2010:

This Wells family moved around several states during the missionary & pastoral work of Rev. Ashbel S Wells. Several children were born in either Indiana or Michigan. Three are known to have been buried in Fairfield, Iowa. Two are now found in California. Frederick is likely in Michigan since that is where the family was living at that time. Edward's death and burial are not known at present.

Thanks to the resources of FindAGrave and Ancestry.com family tree and census information, the following are now known to be children of Rev. Ashbel Shipley Wells and Sophia Hastings Wells: John Henry Wells, George Ashbel Wells, Harriett Eliza Wells Jordan (Mrs. Albert Rufus Jordan), Juliet (a/k/a Juliette in some sources) Hastings Wells Stever (Mrs. George Stever), and Anna (a/k/a Arena) Sophia Wells Averill (Mrs. Norman S Averill).

It appears that sisters Juliet and Sophia moved to California and were both professionally employed in the schools systems of the Los Angeles area. Juliet is found listed in the 1900 US Census as then living with her sister Sophia and brother-in-law Norman S. Averill).

Two other children are reported on an Ancestry family tree as being children of Ashbel and Sophia Wells: Frederick Orlando Wells (reportedly June 24, 1838 - Aug. 13, 1838) and Edward Shepherd Wells (b. Oct. 10, 1846 - d.????). These are not confirmed, but appear to be credible. Information about them would be appreciated.
