Hays -- Adolph "Ott" Gottschalk, 84, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at the Hays Good Samaritan Center. Mr. Gottschalk was born April 18, 1917, on the family farm in Rush County to William and Anna Munsch Gottschalk.

He was a retired farmer and a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 4166 of Schoenchen and the Bishop Cunningham Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus of Hays. He also served on the school board and the Parish Council of the St. Anthony's Church, where he also was a youth teacher.

He married Irene Stecklein in 1939. She died in 1941. He then married Jane Befort March 2, 1943, at Schoenchen. She survives.

Other survivors are five sons, James William of Ellsworth, Robert of Westminster, Colo., Timothy of Belleville, Randy of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Loren of Lenexa; four daughters, Gladys Herrman of Emporia, Karen Larkin of Monett, Mo., Michelle Sander of Tribune and Dee Ann Garrison of Hays; a sister, Rose Wasinger of Schoenchen; 28 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Matthew Urban; four brothers, Peter, Wendelin, Marcus and Vincent; seven sisters, Regina Bieker, Mary Pfannenstein, Amelia Gottschalk, Bernadine Unrein, Bertha Schmedemann, Martina Roth and Louise Hoerner.

The funeral was Friday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hays, the Rev. David Metz officiating. Burial was in the St. Anthony¹s Cemetery, Schoenchen.

Memorials have been established in his name at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, the Mary Elizabeth Maternity Home and the St. Anthony¹s Cemetery Association. Hays Memorial Chapel, Inc., was in charge of arrangements.
