Born April 16, 1834 in Adams county Illinois, where he lived most of his life, moving to Hannibal, MO, sometime after 1888. He was employed physically: his occupations listed as farmer, teamster and day laborer. May, 1866, Newton was running a carding machine and sawmill on McCrary Creek near his father's home. His father was David Lock, born Dec. 29, 1793, in KY; his mother was Eleanor Hamblen b. May 29, 1799, VA. Newton married Lucy Ann Holcomb in Richfield on 9/27/1866. He was a veteran of the Civil War, Company B, 84th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry (11 August 1862 - 08 June 1865). Newton died of hemplegia on Nov. 9, 1907, at age 73 and is buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Hannibal.
