From the book entitled “A HISTORY OF THE HAMBLEN
AND ALLIED FAMILIES” by A. Porter Hamblen.

HAMBLEN AUBERRY LOCK, son of Eleanor (nee Hamblen) and David Lock, born, December 10, 1825, on the Job Hamblen homestead, Hamblen Creek, Bartholomew County, Indiana, later, 1836, Hamblen Township, Brown County.

His name recorded in his father's Bible record the same as written above. On the County Clerk record of his second marriage his name was written, "Hamlin A. Lock". It is probable that when he enlisted for army service, Civil War, his name was recorded erroneously "Hamden A. Lock." Being difficult to correct such an error, it was necessary
thereafter for him to use the spelling, "Hamden" which he did. He bore the nickname "Dutch" Lock. He moved with his father's family to Adams County, Illinois, 1830. Married, August 5, 1847,to Nancy Wallace, born July 15, 1830, probably a sister of Jane, his brother Pembroke's wife. In company with his brothers, Thaddeus and Nelson, he made a trip to California, probably attracted by the gold excitement of that period, returning to his home in Illinois a short time prior to September 24, 1851. His wife, Nancy, died, September 4, 1855. Their children were:
ORLANDA FRANCIS LOCK, born , 1839. d. April, 1859.
LAVINA JANE Lock, died quite young,
Infant child, died quite young.
ALLEN A. Lock, Sept. 4, 1855.

He married second, September 28, .1856, in Adams County, Eliza Ellen Lewton, born, July 22, 1842. They moved, October, 181/6, to Grundy County, Missouri, 16 miles from where his brothers, Thaddeus, Nelson and Newton, settled in Mercer County. In the fall of 1861, they moved back to Adams County, Illinois, where they continued to live. He enlisted, August 9, 1862, in Company E, 84th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry, Civil War. Took part in the hard fought Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, October 8, 1862. Took sick, in November and was sent to hospital. In December, took measles which served him so badly that he was sent home, where he arrived February 27, 1863. His discharge was dated March 4, 1863.

He was a fine carpenter and millwright. May, 1866, he, in partnership with his brother, Newton, and Jasper Lewton, was operating a carding machine and sawmill. Latter part of 1873, he sold his farm and bought a half interest in his father's fine steam flouring mill, located on McCraney's Creek, Adams County. This he continued to operate for a number of years. Eliza, his wife, died, December 21, 1892. Their children were:
JASPER PERRY LOCK, born Sept. 21, 1859.
Two children that died as infants
JOHN A. LOCK, born May 2, 1862.
LEWIS LOCK, born August 23, 1865.
AMANDA ELLEN LOCK, born Oct 6, 1867.
NELSON LOCK, born June 18, 1870.
WILLIAM LOCK, born Aug. 18. 1872.
EDWARD BRINK LOCK, born Oct. 10, 1874.

He married third, July 16, 1893, in Pike County, Nancy Hull, a widow. She died, November 29, 1901. About the time of her death he went to Hamblen Township Brown County, Indiana, where he made his home until near the time of his death.

Here he married fourth, to his cousin, Catharine Taylor Smith, born, May 19, 1837. Rev. William Hamblen officiating, January 11, 1902. They resided on part of the original Job Hamblen homestead which she owned and where he was born. He went on a visit to the home of his daughter, Amanda Wendorff at Berry. Adams County, Illinois, where he took ill and died, July 15, 1910, buried in the Hull Cemetery nearby. Politically he voted Republican. Affiliated with the Methodist Church.
