Wilbur was a graduate of Morrisville High School in 1931. He joined the CCC in 1933. He also worked for Brockway Truck from 1939-1944, then went to work for Durkee's Bakery until the summer of 1947. He was a full time farmer from 1946-1960. He built numerous houses in the area as well as serving on the Cortland County Board of Supervisors from 1960-1968. Wilbur loved to travel, fish, and hunt with his beloved wife, Violet, of 60 years. He was a great story teller and had a joke for every occasion even to his last day with us. "Grandpa Elmer," as he was known by many, is survived by his children, Joan (Raymond) Hoy, LeVerna (Roger)Tinker, Bob (Marion)Elmer and Richard Elmer; 10 grandchildren,23 great grandchildren, 2 great- great-grandchildren and his sister Marie Sutherland. He was predeceased by his wife Violet in 1995 and four brothers and one sister.
The family will receive friends Friday October 5, 2012 at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home, 9 Lincoln Ave., Cortland, from 10am-12pm. A memorial service will be conducted by Rev. John Aukema directly after the calling hours.
