LEGACIES TAKE EFFECT 5 YEARS AFTER DEATH.
Because of a provision in the will that no legacy was to take effect for five years after his death, the transfer tax appraisal has just been completed in the estate of Thomas M. Prentiss who died March 14, 1915 at Skaneateles. There was a total estate of $62,585.16, according to the report of Attorney Richard B. Smith, as approved by Surrogate Sadler. Wells College, Aurora, and five Skaneateles churches, the village of Skaneateles and the Skaneateles library shared in the estate. Jane R. Prentiss, of Boston, Mass., no relation, received $4,738.93 while Melville Prentiss, nephew, of Boston and Armory (sic) Prentiss, grandnephew of Medford, Mass., each received $14,216.79.
[Notation: Jane R. Prentiss, mentioned in the above article, was the wife of Henry Prentiss, brother of Thomas Melville Prentiss, fact being, she was related, she was his sister-in-law, grandmother of Amory Prentiss, Thomas's grandnephew. It's a shame that people can't get their facts straight.]

The full will of Thomas Melville Prentiss can be viewed in the "Semi-Weekly Skaneateles Free Press", dated Tuesday, April 6, 1915, page # not noted on page. If you find it, it is an interesting read.
