The lot’s chief resident is Walter Hunt, who, in 1849, received a patent for the safety pin. He also invented a sewing machine, but lost interest in it, believing that it would cause unemployment. Elias Howe eventually patented a similar machine. Howe is buried just a few yards north of the Hunt lot.
