James was a co-founder of American Express and Wells, Fargo & Co., and became the third president of American Express after William's death in 1881.
James C. Fargo died in his 86th year at NYC. Funeral services were held at St. Barnabas Church and his body was transported by train from Grand Central Station to Tarrytown, NY for interment at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
