Born to a noble family in Catania, Sicily, in 1430, Blessed Bernardo Scammacca OP., led his early life in extravagant luxury and sin. Left immobilized by a deep foot wound after a duel, he sought to a holier life, joining, in 1452, the Order of Friars Preachers.

Named prior of the convent of St. Dominic of Catania and later of Palermo, he was furthermore elected vicar general of the reformed convents of Sicily. He also took care of the construction of a hospital, which still exists to this day. Passing away in 1487, he was buried inside a common grave. Seeking his intercession, many used to visit his grave thus it was decided to transfer his remains to a better location. Opening the grave, his body was found to be intact and it remains incorrupt to this day, housed in an urn inside the church of Saint Dominic of Catania.

Pope Leo XII approved his cult on March 8, 1825. The Order of Preachers celebrates his liturgical memory on January 27.
