Mike Stojanovic, the all-time leading goal-scorer for the Rochester Lancers of the North American Soccer League, died Thursday in Toronto. He was 63. Stojanovic had 51 goals in 115 games for the Lancers from 1976 to 1980. When the Lancers folded after the 1980 season, he signed with the San Diego Sockers and scored 23 goals in 32 games and was selected NASL Player of the Year. He ranked ninth on the career list with 83 goals when the league folded in 1984.

"He was an intense competitor with supreme confidence in his ability to score goals," long-time Lancers trainer Joe Sirianni said Friday. "He wanted the ball all of the time and had the strength and speed to put shots on goal with defenders all over him." The native of Yugoslavia played on Canada's national soccer team in 1980-81 and scored 5 goals in 14 caps (international games). He was selected to the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame in 2009.
Stojanovic managed to attend the Lancers reunion in August. He received the loudest ovation among the dozens of former Lancers from fans attending the ceremonies at a Rhinos game at Marina Auto Stadium. "He was emaciated but he was smiling for the entire two days," said Lancers founder, long-time team co-owner and close friend Charlie Schiano. "I was so glad he could make it and hear a cheering crowd one more time."
