FRANCIS LEON (SMILEY) DOWNS, 76, a St. Francis native, died Saturday, Feb. 6, at the residence of his sister in Corydon, Ind. He was an army veteran of World War II and a retired employee of Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. in Los Angeles. He was the son of the late Joseph Lawrence Downs Sr. and the former Clara Frances Mills. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Marvin (Mary Jo) Edelen, Corydon, Ind., and Mrs. Margaret Robey, St. Francis; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral was held Tuesday morning at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, St. Francis. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Kevin J. Bryan officiated. Pallbearers were Joseph Albert Robey, Joseph L. Robey, Allen Robey, Robert Edelen, Max Edelen, and Dave Downs. The Marion County High School ROTC conducted military rites at the cemetery. A prayer service was held Monday evening at the Mattingly Funeral Home, Loretto.
