The services were attended by a large concourse of people, including business men and church workers, who had known and esteemed him in life.
The pallbearers were his three sons, Harry, Earl C. and Clarence Scherff; two sons-in-law, George Kuefner and Ernest McRae and his brother-in-law, Harry Young.
Mr. Scherff was born in Oshkosh, Wis., Feb. 17, 1855, and came to Lacon, Ill., with the family in 1987. After engaging in the shoe business in several Illinois cities, he came to Peoria. Here for 37 years he acted as traveling salesman for shoe houses and for two years traveled for the Wilson Grocery company.
He joined the Peoria Retail Merchants association in 1905 and was its secretary for nine and one-half years. He was an active worker in the Peoria Methodist Espicopal churches and held all the local offices of the church. He was also president of the Peoria District Epworth league for five years and was fourth vice president of the Illinois Esworth league.
He is survived by his widow, three sons and two daughters.
