NOGALES — Funeral services will be held here tomorrow for famed sculptor Alfredo Just, who died yesterday at his Nogales, Son., home. He was 66.A native of Valencia, Spain, who bore scars from fighting in the Spanish Civil War, Mr. Just worked almost to the time of his death. He had suffered from cancer.Services will be held at Carroon Mortuary at 10 a.m. and burial will be at Nogales Masonic Cemetery, with Masonic graveside services.Mr. Just's most famed area works are two pieces which stand off Highway 16 in Nogales, Son., a few miles south of the border.ONE PIECE shows a naked Indian plunging a lance into the heart of a bird which depicts ignorance. The other is a 20-foot statue of Benito Juarez, who gave Mexico its first constitution. The larger piece created controversy and cries of indecency from the Mexican clergy when it was completed in 1964. But the furor died and the work now is highly regarded.Mr. Just, a leader of Spanish Republicans, fled battle-torn Spain in 1939 after 14 members of his family had been killed in battles against Franco's armies.Ironically, the few works of Mr. Just which survived Spain's war are in great demand now.Mr. Just went from Spain to exile in Mexico City where he "slept for nine days" and then went furiously to work.MEXICO CITY is the site of what is described as Just's greatest piece.Located in the Plaza de Toros, it consists of a group of 35 bulls and horsemen whichdepict the history of bullfighting.Mr. Just's busts of Simon Bolivar are located in palaces in several countries in Latin America. His works in this country in elude a bust of Franklin D Roosevelt in Hyde Park, N.Y. and a full-length statue of Harry S. Truman at the University of Missouri, Columbia, M.His last work, completed this year, is a 3%-foot bust of Father Hidalgo Costillo, who led Mexico's fight for independence from Spain in 1810.THE BUST is cast in bronze and will be set this fall on a pedestal in the square near the international border here.Mr. Just was a 32nd degree Mason. He is survived by his widow, Caridad; a sister, Consuelo, of Valencia, Spain, and two brothers, Andres, of Valencia, and Julio, who is minister of foreign affairs for the Spanish Republican government-in-exile in Paris, France. THANKS TO DIANE WINTERS FOR THIS INFORMATION.
