The tombstone appears to portray the rank insignia of a sergeant during the American Civil War. The 1880 Census for Youngstown, Ohio, shows Frank with a number of children and that he and his wife Frances were born in Baden, Germany (Prussia). What is known is that Frank Siefert joined the Union Army at the age of 24 as a Private. His enlistment date is 2 Sep 1861 and he was mustered out on 23 Sep 1864. Records reveal that he was attached to Company I, 37th Infantry Regiment, Ohio. If he stayed with this unit, they were engaged in more than 58 individual battles, some of which were unsuccessful. By all standards, Company I endured many periods of heavy combat. It would not surprise me if subsequent research on Frank reveals that he may have been wounded in the Civil War. In 1880, Frank had the following children: Frank, Louisa, Charles, John, Agnes, Emma, Theodore, and Joseph A. Siefert. Frank's brother Joseph also emigrated from Baden and had a large family in the Youngstown, Ohio, area. Agnes, more than likely, is the matriarch of the family.
