Lithuanian Politician. He served as the 13th Prime Minister of Lithuania from July 4, 2006 to December 9, 2008. After serving in the military, he worked on several cultural monuments in the country from 1972 to 1978. From 1978 to 1982, he studied political science and upon graduation, he became a member of the Communist Party of Lithuania. He later served in various party posts. After Lithuanian independence was declared in 1990, he became involved in state matters and served seven terms in the Seimas, Lithuania's national legislature. He was first elected as a member of the Democratic Labour Party of Lithuania, but later became a member of the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania. From 2004 to 2006, he served as Minister of National Defense. He became prime minister in 2006 and went on to serve in this post until the 2008 parliamentary elections, after which he stepped down. He remained a member of the Seimas until 2020 and also served as the Chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania from 2018 to 2021.
