AGED GAS VICTIM DIES AT HOSPITAL


Mrs. Gertrude V. Bemis Succumbs to Effects Of Fumes


Mrs. Gertrude V. Bemis, 88, of 146 Main street, who was overcome by illuminating gas fumes in her home last Thursday, died at City hospital, yesterday morning. Mrs. Bemis also had been suffering from pneumonia.


A neighbor, passing the door of the Bemis flat, detected an odor of gas fumes. An investigation revealed gas flowing from a jet which had been left partially open.


George W. Bemis, for many years a manufacturer of piano parts, was not affected by the fumes.


Mrs. Bemis, was born in Barre, Vt., the daughter of Jewett and Susan L. (Nason) Mann. She leaves her husband, George W., two sisters, Mrs. Hettie, wife of Fred W. Barrett of Hartford, Mrs. Nellie Saunders, widow of George A. Saunders of Southboro, two brothers, James Mann of Springfield and Charles of Hartford.


She was a past supreme grand chief of Worcester lodge of Pythias Sisters and a member and past grand of Naomi Rebekah lodge and past president of Women's Relief Corps. She had resided in Worcester for the past 58 years.


The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the funeral parlors of George H. Longstreet Co., 31 Harvard street. Rev. Dr. Vincent E. Tomlinson, pastor of the First Universalist church will officiate. Burial will be in Hope cemetery.
