James Howe Cheek was the son of Amelia Helen "Minnie" Ritchey and Joel Owsley Cheek founder of Maxwell House Coffee.
James Howe was a Maxwell House executive and a retired broker. He went to work for his father in the wholesale grocery business here in 1908. In 1916 he was sent to Richmond, Virginia to start and manage the Maxwell House plant there.
In 1924 he was sent to Los Angeles, California to start a plant and introduce Maxwell House coffee to the West Coast. He remained there as manager until 1929, when the company was sold to General Foods.
Mr. Cheek then went into the brokerage business until 1936, when he moved to Charlottesville, Virginia. He lived in retirement in Daytona Beach from 1955 until his death. He attended Nashville public schools and graduated from Vanderbilt University. He was a Mason and Shriner of the Joppa Lodge, Richmond, Virginia.
Mr. Cheek married Sara Fitzgerald Robertson on June 10, 1916. To this union a son was born, James Howe Cheek, Jr. Grandson, James Howe Cheek III and great-grandchildren James Howe Cheek IV, Daniel Woods Cheek, and Matthew Huddleston Cheek.
James second marriage was to Ruth Coffin Sewell on February 2, 1952.
Mr.Cheek was an active member of First Baptist Church of Daytona where his funeral was held.
