A native of Burkesville Kentucky , Robert moved to Nashville Tennessee at an early age with his parents Joel Owsley Cheek and Minnie Ritchey cheek. After preparatory schools in Nashville he attended Vanderbilt University. In 1900 he joined his father's business, the Cheek-Neal Coffee Company, the famous Maxwell House Coffee. He managed the company plant in Houston after building and developing it; later returning to Nashville to manage the main plant and becoming vice-president of the company. When the company was sold to General Foods in 1928, he became president of the Maxwell House division, and served on the board of directors until he retired in 1950. His career also included being a director at Nashville Bank & Trust Co., Third National Bank, National life & Accident Insurance Co., and Welch Grape Juice Co. He was Chairman of the Board at Cumberland Motor Company in Nashville, and a director of the American Automobile Association since 1945. He was a life member of the Vanderbilt University Board of Trust and served on many of their committees. Also a trustee of the National Fund for Medical Education, New York, and advisor for the Junior League Home for Crippled Children. He served as president of the advisory board of the Salvation Army of Nashville from 1945-1950 and on the advisory committee of the Old Woman's Home of Nashville. He attended Christ Church Episcopal and was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason.

In 1908 he married the former Helen Louise Pickslay of New York, with whom he raised his family in Nashville and continued his life of service and leadership until his death.
