James Edward Trainer, Jr. passed away on February 6, 2008 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was 80.

A long time resident of the Palm Beaches, he lived most recently in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Born May 9, 1927 in Akron, Ohio, he was the son of James Edward and Mary Langan Trainer. Mr. Trainer attended Culver Military Academy in Indiana and graduated from Kenyon College. He served with distinction in The Merchant Marine during World War II, helping transport German POW's to work camps in the United States.

Jim Trainer, as he was known, spent the majority of his career with the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company where he served in various management positions including plant manager of both the Memphis, Tennessee and the Des Moines, Iowa facilities. He was recognized many times for his ability to bring managememt and unions together on the difficult issues of the day.

He was an avid sports fan and particularly enjoyed college football, especially the Miami Hurricanes. Jim was intensely interested in politics and was an integral part of President Lyndon Johnson's Iowa presidential election team in 1964 and met with the President on numerous occasions.

His three children survive Mr. Trainer, James Edward Trainer III (Robyn) of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., William Campbell Trainer (Patricia) of Chicago, Ill., and Suzanne Trainer Shriber (Sterling) of Akron, Ohio. Ten grandchildren and a sister, Ann T. (Mrs. Morton) Downey of Palm Beach, Fla., survive him. Jim's brother, Thomas Weldon Trainer of Beverly Hills, Calif., predeceased him.

A private service and burial was held at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on February 22, 2008.
