Afton P. Maw 1915 ~ 2008
Enjoying Sweet Reunions On January 25, this world lost one of its most valiant. Afton Powell Maw passed away following a short illness due to conditions related to age. She was approaching 93. Afton was born May 13, 1915 in Salt Lake City to Ireta Miller and Thomas Winter Powell Jr. She has only one younger sister (Beth P. Alder). The girls were 12 and 7 when they lost their father. Nine years later they also lost their mother to auto accident related injuries. Thereafter, Afton and Beth tenderly relied upon each other and forged a very special lifetime relationship. Afton met her loving husband, Harold L. Maw, who swept her off her feet. Their eternal companionship began November 26, 1938 in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they raised six children. Glen (Cindy), Marybeth (the late Leigh Cannon), Gilbert (Jenny), Blaine (Jeanne), Evan (Laurie), and Arlen (Debra Brandon). She is "grandma" to 21, and 27 great grandchildren affectionately call her "GG". She and Harold had many wonderful travel adventures together, but in July 2001, he suddenly traveled on alone leaving her a widow. Afton had a firm testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and put that into action through service in primary, scouting, missionary and temple assignments. She was compassionate, soft spoken, even tempered, non-complaining and a loving wife and mother who was always concerned about serving others and never herself. She had a great appreciation for life's blessings, never wasted anything useful and was satisfied with simple things. She will be remembered for her great sense of humor and all the "SMILE"s she gave away. Her influence has touched the lives of countless and her memory will inspire generations. She is loved and will be missed greatly. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 1, 2008, at the Colonial Hills 2nd Ward, 1455 South 1700 East in Salt Lake City at 11:00 a.m. A viewing will be held on Thursday evening, January 31, from 6-8 p.m. at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, and at the church Friday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the funeral service. Interment: Salt Lake City Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.holbrookmortuary.com
