The only child of Horace White and Christine Cachikis, she first starred in an episode of "Empire Builders." She later began her television career in 1939, singing songs on "The Merry Widow." By 1954, she had her own talk show, "The Betty White Show," which faced criticism for having a Black performer, resulting in Betty giving him more screen time. By the 1960s, she was featured in both game and talk shows featuring Jack Paar and Johnny Carson. In the 1980s she starred in "The Golden Girls" with Bea Arthur, Estelle Getty, and Rue McClanahan. The show was extremely successful and White won an Emmy for her role. She reprised her role as Rose in the short-lived Golden Girls spin-off, "The Golden Palace" from 1992 to 1993. She continued to star in films and television shows throughout the 2000s and 2010s. She married three times in her life, first to Dick Barker whom she met while volunteering during World War II. After Barker, she married Hollywood talent agent Lane Allen in 1947 but divorced in 1949 after being pressured to give up her career. Her third and final marriage was to television personality Allen Ludden from 1963 until his death in 1981. She passed away only 17 days away from her 100th birthday.
