Biography of George Beavis
George Beavis sailed from Plymouth to Port Phillip aboard the "Cheapside" in 1848. He was employed 10 years later as a shepherd on MacKinnon's Station; living on the property in a Shingle Hut with his wife, Catherine and family. George married Catherine Sutherland, a highland girl on the 8th of July, 1855, soon after her arrival in Australia with her parents. The wedding service was conducted by the Rev. Alexander Adam, an early Presbyterian minister who from his headquarters at Beaufort included in his itinerary the squatting stations along the Richardson River. Catherine's occupation was that of a servant when she and George Beavis were married at "Wimmera Lodge" near Crowlands, the house of Mr. Clow, the Commissioner of Crown Lands for the Wimmera.
