Revolutionary Figure. Valentina Ramírez Avitia, known as 'La Leona de Norotal', was a brave woman who fought in the Mexican Revolution alongside Maderista troops, dressed as a man when she was only 17 years old. On the battlefield she called herself Juan Ramírez. She served in the Carranza ranks of Ramón F. Iturbe. She joined the fight on the Puente Cañedo and the Battle of Culiacán, in less than a year she reached the rank of lieutenant. Her life inspired the popular song "La Valentina," sung by the Villa's troops.
