Songwriter, Sandinista Revolutionary. The daughter of an immigrant father to Nicaragua from China, Siu demonstrated a talent for music as a singer, songwriter, and musician at a young. As a songwriter, she is best remembered for composing “Maria Rural,” a song which spoke of the life of Nicaraguan mothers living in the countryside and of poverty. Politically and socially motivated after the 1972 Nicaragua earthquake, she joined the Frente Sandinista de Liberación National (FSLN) in its revolution against the Somoza government in 1973. She was killed in action two years later at the age of 20 in an ambush by the Nicaraguan National Guard near El Sauce, Nicaragua. She remains a highly popular figure among the Nicaraguan people today and her portrait is a recognized symbol of the revolution.
