Folk Figure. A native of Anthon, Iowa, he gained fame as the world's longest hiccupper. He began hiccupping in 1922 while attempting to weigh a hog before slaughtering it. He never found a cure for his problem and he eventually continued hiccupping until 1990, a total of 68 years. Despite this unfortunate problem, Osborne was able to lead a normal life. He was married twice, and had an estimated eight children. His only discomfort he ever had was later in life when he had the risk of losing his false teeth. His condition led him to be featured on the Ripley's Believe It Or Not! program in 1936, That's Incredible in 1980, appearing as a guest on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1983, and also being featured in the Trivial Pursuit board game. He was named the sufferer of the Longest Attack of Hiccups by the Guinness Book of World Records. His hiccups stopped in February 1990. He died from a series of ulcers in May 1991 at the age of 98, in Sioux City, Iowa.Charles Osborne was the man who hiccuped for 68 years from 1922 to 1990. Osborne's hiccups started on June 13, 1922 when he was weighing a hog before slaughtering it. He fell down when he was weighing the hog and he busted a small area in his brain which inhibited the hiccup response. In 1937 on "Robert Ripley's Believe It Or Not" 4,000 people sent emails to Osborne suggesting a cure that might work for his hiccups. He visited over a million doctors but, none could find a cure for his hiccups. Osborne had to put his food through a blender while he was hiccuping so he wouldn't eat solid food and choke on it. Suddenly, in 1990 Osborne's hiccups stopped for an unknown reason. Osborne enjoyed his last 11 months of his life without a single hiccup.
