Sixth President of the Philippines. A member of the Philippines's Liberal Party, he served as president from April 17, 1948 to December 30, 1953. Prior to becoming president, he was a lawyer entering politics as a representative from 1919 to 1925. He was then elected as senator from 1925 to 1931. In 1934, he became a member of the Philippine independence commission obtaining his country's independence. In 1935, he helped draft the first constitution and then served as secretary of the interior and finance in the new government. He was elected vice-president in the 1946 election and became president in 1948 with the death of the incumbent president. He was subsequently elected president in 1949. He lost the election of 1953. He is best remembered for notable postwar reconstruction, general economic gains, and increased economic aid from the United States. After leaving the post, he retired to private life.
