Statesman, 1st Constitutional President of the Dominican Republic . Between 1844 and 1961 he served four different terms. He served as Governor-General of Santo Domingo from 18 March 1861 to 20 July 1862. Prior to becoming president he was a military commander who was a lifelong supporter of the Dominican Republic revolt against Haitian dominance and was a distinguished general during the Dominican Republic War of Independence. After becoming president, he governed like a dictator. He is best remembered for the separation of Haiti from the country but in doing so exiled the Dominican independents who had helped. He believed the country should be under Spain. He also arrested or exiled members of La Trinitaria, also key persons in separating Haiti from the Dominican Republic. Under increasing pressure from the opposition which had been organizing a coup d'etat, he was forced to resign from his position. He died a short time after leaving his last post.
