Edward Brown a well known Hebrew citizen of East Duquesne Avenue was struck by an engine on the P. V. and C. railroad Tuesday afternoon and died two hours later of injuries sustained. The cornonor returned a verdict of accidential death.
Brown conducted a small store at the corner of East Duquenes and River Avenues and had been engaged for several hors in picking up loose coal along the railroad. He had worked his way down to a pint a short distance below Oliver station and failed to notice a engine that was approaching from the direction of Thompson station. The engine was being run backwards and the engineer did not see the man. Brown was struck by the tender and thrown between the tracks. the wheels did not touch his body, but he was rolled along for some distance under the engine. Alththough badly hurt Brown retained consciousness and was hastily taken to the office of Dr. L. H. Botkin where it was discovered that sereral ribs had bee crushed over the heart, that his back had been injured and that he had sustained a number of cuts on his head.
A great crowd collected about the doctor's office and more or less excitement was created by several womon friends who fainted and had to be carried home. Brown died two hours after the awful occurrence, and the remains were removed to his home and prepared for burial. Interment was made on Wednesday in the Duquesne Hebrew Cemetery (Beth Jacob).
Mr. Brown was born in Austria and was almost 53 years old. He had come to this country 20 years ago and settled in Scranton. About eight years ago he moved to Duquesne and had resided here ever since. He is survived by a wife and family of six children.
