William Cattell saved Lafayette College from financial ruin during the Civil War by conducting a huge fundraiser. The street going up College Hill to Lafayette College was named after him.

REV. WM. C. CATTELL, D.D., LL. D.
Philadelphia, Feb. 11-

REV. Wm. C. Cattell, D.D., LL. D., for twenty years President of Lafayette College, died early this morning at his home in this city.
Dr. Cattell was one of the most distinguished Presbyterian divines in the country.
He was born at Salem N.J., in 1827, was graduated from Princeton College in 1844, and from the Theological Seminary in 1852. In 1863 he was chosen president of Lafayette College, which position he held until 1883, when he resigned.
He leaves a widow and two sons.
