Dr. Cattell was a prominent pathologist in Philadelphia, and authored textbooks on the techniques of conducting post-mortem examinations.
He graduated from the Hill School and then from Lafayette College in 1883. He studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Leipzig and the University of Freburg (both in Germany).
He was a member of Delta Kappa Upsilon, the Union League and the Philadelphia County Club. He was an Army veteran of World War I, serving in France as a Major in the Medical Corps from 1917-1919. He died at the Mount Alto Veterans' Hospital.
