She was a daughter of the late Mark Ervin and Jennieve Henson Hawkins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend Robert Dean; one sister, Barbara Ward; two infant sisters, Margaret and Eunice Hawkins; and one infant brother, William Hawkins.
She retired from Kellwood Company as a seamstress.
Viola was of the Missionary Baptist faith, served in different offices in the church and served as clerk of the Newfound Baptist Association and the Newfound Community Death Benefit Association.
