Christopher Collan Morcom
CHRISTOPHER COLLAN MORCOM, born July 13th, 1911, came to Sherborne (Ross’) as a Scholar in the Summer term of 1925. He at once made his mark as a boy of outstanding intellectual gifts. He could have done well in other subjects, but Mathematics and Science attracted him most of all, and to these he added an unusual knowledge of Astronomy. He won an Open Scholarship at Trinity College, Cambridge last December and was to have gone into residence in October next. There is no doubt that his career would have been a brilliant one; but this was not to be. Early in February he was suddenly attacked again by an illness for which he had a severe operation three years ago. He faced the unexpected danger with the uncomplaining courage which was a part of him. He was taken to London and it was hoped that the attack would pass off. A relapse led to two operations, and this was too much for his strength. He passed away peacefully at noon six days after the blow fell.
Great as were his intellectual gifts, they were more than equalled by the charm of his nature. To know him was to love him for his modesty, his kindness, his own great love of happiness and laughter and his stainless character. Those who had the privilege of knowing him intimately will preserve a memory of even more than this with an abiding thankfulness for four or five years of friendship.
He lies near the home he loved so well in Worcestershire. It is there that in thought we breathe our “Atque in perpetuum, frater, ave atque vale.”
He was buried at dawn with the darkness all behind him – though there was no darkness in this life save the pain of his illness.

Christopher Collan Morcom (1911-1930) was born at Bromsgrove on 13 July 1911, the son of Colonel Reginald Keble Morcom (1877-1961) and Frances Isobel Morcom (née Swan) (1880-1941) of The Clock House, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire. He attended Sherborne School in Dorset from May 1925 until his death, aged 19, on 13 February 1930, where he was a Scholar and a School Prefect. He had won a Scholarship to Trinity College, Cambridge, but died before he was able to take it up. While at Sherborne, Morcom was a great friend of Alan Turing. There are some photographs of Christopher Morcom in the Sherborne School archives and the face of Christ in the window does appear to have been modelled on him. After Christopher's death the Morcom family also commissioned the artist Norman Hirst to make a likeness of him.

"Thou wilt show me the path of life." By Karl Parsons, 1931.
The St Christopher window is the east window of the lady chapel. It's quite a small window (118cms x 46 cms) and is in memory of Christopher Morcom, aged 19, son of Colonel and Mrs Morcom who lived locally.
St Christopher is depicted after carrying the Christchild across the river.
St Christopher's head is thought to be a likeness of Christopher Morcom.
Karl Parsons (1884-1934) was first a pupil and then assistant of the leading Arts and Crafts stained glass artist, Christopher Whall. This is the only example of his work in Worcestershire that I am aware of.
