Mrs. Allender, Artist, Dies
Mrs. Nina E. Allender, 85, of
1200 W. Seventh St., one of the
fighters for women's suffrage and
equal rights, died yesterday (Apr.
2, 1957) at home.
Her cover cartoons for "Equal
Rights" magazine were nationally
known and are on permanent ex-
hibit in the Congressional Li-
brary.
She was a founder of the Arts
Club of Washington and her
paintings have been exhibited
there as recently as last year.
Mrs. Allender was born in To-
peka, Kan., and resided in Wash-
ington and Chicago before mov-
ing here two years ago. She
worked for the Treasury Depart-
ment for many years.
Mrs. Allender was a former member of
the board of executives of the
National Women's Party.
***In addition*** Nina was the main political cartoonist for "The Suffragist".
Nina E. Allender's cartoons are now in the art archives of the Library of Congress. Her drawing of Susan B. Anthony mounting the steps of the Capitol with a petition of 20,000 names asking for the vote for women) to present to Congress was made into a postage stamp in 1936, in commemoration of the thirtieth anniversary of her death.
Many of her original cartoons are also held at The Sewell-Belmont House in Washington DC.
(Her father David J. Evans Civil War Pension records make reference to her name as Inez Nina Evans). This is the only reference found to state that name.
