She graduated from Will Rogers High School in 1945 and continued her education at the University of Tulsa, majoring in music. She dreamed of being a concert pianist, and she gained a lot of experience on KVOO Radio's student shows.
She married Joseph F. Clark in 1947. He died in 1998, after 51 years of marriage.
Whitley volunteered with the Tulsa Philharmonic orchestra and was a founding member of the Tulsa Junior Philharmonic.
In 1979 she was vice president of the Women's Council of the American Symphony Orchestra League. As president of the Oklahoma Association of Symphony Orchestras, she received
a Governor's Arts Award for Community Service in 1983.
Whitley also was chairwoman and director emeritus of the Tulsa Philharmonic Board and was chairwoman of the orchestra's 20th and 40th anniversary celebrations. She was on the Oklahoma Association of Symphony Orchestras board and was a member of the Tulsa District of the Met Opera Auditions.
In 2001, she married Loyd Whitley, who survives her.
She also is survived by two sons, Joseph F. Clark Jr. and William P. Clark, both of Tulsa; a brother, William Randolph Davis of Paradise Valley, Ariz.; two sisters, Beverly Versen and Bonnie Jean Turner, both of Tulsa; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
