Additional information
The Johannite Commandery in Braunschweig was a branch of the Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem (the Johanniter Order) in the city of Braunschweig, Lower Saxony, presumably founded around 1173/1174. In the 15th century, the Church of St. John served as the domicile church for the Mary and John Brotherhood (Elendengilde), the Hoppen Brotherhood, the Hutfilter Brotherhood, and the Träger Brotherhood.
According to a historical description, it was an unadorned Gothic chapel with two portals and two pointed-arch windows on the front side. One portal was adorned with two statues, and there was a delicate spire on the roof. In addition to the high altar dedicated to John the Baptist, there was another altar dedicated to Simon and Judas, which had been endowed in 1328 by Herwich von Watenstedt. The walls featured paintings of the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist.
With the introduction of the Reformation in Braunschweig in 1528, the chapel of Johannishof was closed and sold to the city council in 1549. It remained vacant for a long time but was reconsecrated in 1573 and handed over to the St. Ulrici community. Between 1671 and 1718, it served as a garrison church. In 1784, it was demolished along with the other buildings of Johannishof.
