The St Magni Church in Braunschweig dates back to the early
11th century and serves as the focal point of the Magniviertel in the historic
Altewiek district. The consecration certificate from the year 1031 is
considered the first documentary evidence of the existence of what is now the
city of Braunschweig. In the document, the settlement is referred to as
Brunesguik. The Apulian bishop Magnus is presumed to be the namesake,
particularly revered among the Frisians.
The parish church of St. Magni was rebuilt from 1252
onwards, with remnants of the original church preserved in the foundations.
During the Second World War, the church suffered severe damage, especially from
the bombing raid on April 23, 1944. After the war, only the tower and the
column arcades of the nave remained standing. From 1956 to 1964, the structure
was restored in a significantly altered, partially modernized form.
