From a newspaper obituary:

It will be with great shock to a great many people in Elmira to learn of the unexpected death of Lyman G. Marvin, for ten years the faithful janitor of the Madison Avenue primary school. Mr. Marvin was attacked by pleurisy last Thursday, which developed into typhoid pneumonia, and when that dread ailment attacked him, his mot over-robust physique quickly succumbed, and he died at his residence this forenoon about 9 o'clock. He was born in 1841 in Webb Mills, and was a farmer when he came to Elmira. His father was the late Seth Marvin, and the late Edward Marvin, poormaster, was his brother. He leaves w wife and four children. He was a member of the Wetamoe tribe of Red Men, and of Elmira lodge, United Workmen, a benefit order. The funeral will be on Friday at 2 o'clock.
When "Lyme" Marvin died, one of the best men who has lived passed away. True, he was not a rich man, nor a man who made a stir in the world; he was a poor man and an honest man; his kindness of heart and generous nature prompted him to do acts of kindness and good will, which will form some of the settings in the crown of glory, which those such as he should wear when they pass into the kingdom of Heaven. The writer does not know whether Lyme Marvin was a religious man as the term goes; but somewhere in the gospel the Master said –"come ye blessed of my father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungered and ye gave me meat, I was a was thirsty and ye gave me drink, I was a stranger and ye took me in, naked and ye clothe me, I was sick and ye visited me.: So had Lyman Marvin been laden with riches h, he could not take any of it with him where he has gone, but there is something better which he can take, and those who knew him feel that he will be welcomed there with the glad acclaim: "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these, my brethren, ye have done it unto me."
