Veteran actor Kwan Shan passes away at the age of 79-

The 1960s Hong Kong screen idol and father to Rosamund Kwan lost his battle against lung cancer.

Former Shaw Brothers star Kwan Shan, father of popular actress Rosamund Kwan, has passed away at the age of 79. It is said that Rosamund announced her father's death through a text message on Oct 1. A celebrated figure in the '60s Chinese film industry, Kwan Shan made his debut in 1958 with the film, The True Story of Ah Q, after two years of artiste training. He was presented with the Best Actor Award at the 1958 Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, making him the first Hong Kong actor to win an award at an international film festival.

Kwan Shan has starred in more than 80 movies throughout his acting career. He is most fondly remembered for his roles in Love without End, Black and Blue and Too Late for Love. He withdrew from the entertainment scene and started his own business in the 80s, occasionally making guest appearances in films.

Rosamund's good friend and Taiwanese actress Elaine Jin shared, "Uncle Kwan passed away from lung cancer. Chi-chi (Rosamund) is doing fine."

Kwan Shan and actress Cheung Bing Sai divorced in 1975, after 15 years of marriage the couple has two children - Rosamund and a son. Rosamund shares a close relationship with her father and stayed in Hong Kong to accompany him after his ex-wife and son migrated to the United States. Kwan Shan's two children accompanied him in his last days.
