John F. Keen, of this city, senior member of the well-known Third street firm of note brokers, Keen, Bodine, & Co, died at Saratoga yesterday. Mr. Keen was 73 years of age. The cause of his death was paralysis.
For some time Mr. Keen has been in declining health and three weeks ago he went to Saratoga with a view of finding improvement in the change. His death, however, was not anticipated, and of his four children, but one, Miss Lydia, was at his bedside, the others being unable to reach Saratoga before the stroke proved fatal. His wife accompanied him.
Mr. Keen was widely known as a note broker with an intimate knowledge of the standing of firms. He was born in Allegheny county, but came to this city in early life and engaged in mercantile pursuits, subsequently founding the firm of which he was the senior member. He was a man of eminent personal qualities and leaves a large circle of friends. As a Methodist he took an active interest in church affairs and was a trustee of the Arch Street Methodist Episcopal Church. He was also identified with the Tenth Ward Charity Organization. Of his four children, one daughter is the wife of J. M. Cornell, of New York; another is the wife of Major Livermore, of Newport, and his son, Barton L. Keen, is engaged in business in Chicago.
The remains will be brought to Philadelphia for interment from his late residence, 1209 Arch street.
