Roseline Jane Bennett

Roseline Bennett, 101, passed away on Saturday, September 15, 2012 at Park Ridge Nursing Home in Pleasant Hill, Iowa.

Roseline was born to Alfred and Mary (Habourdin) Croenne on December 26, 1910 in Hocking, Iowa. Her parents were born and raised in Bruary, France and came to America in 1906 with two boys, Alfred and Leon and two girls, Mary and Adele.

Roseline came to Des Moines when she was 17 years old and worked for the Bell Telephone Company until dial phones came in. She was one of the last hired and was transferred to Detroit, Michigan where her eldest brother lived and worked for Michigan Bell Telephone Company.

Roseline married William Andrew Bennett in 1930 and had one daughter, Shirley. She also had two grandsons, Randy and Mark; granddaughter, Renae; ten great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She helped to raise four foster children. She became a widow in 1975.

Roseline volunteered at Mercy Hospital for 28 years and had 13,500 hours in 2004. She began volunteering in 1960 when her husband, Bill, was overseas as a Navy Sea Bee. She was still volunteering one day a week at Mercy at the age of 94.

She and Bill won a citywide ballroom dancing contest in 1935 that 175 couples had entered.

Roseline is survived by her daughter, Shirley (Richard) Burdock of Pleasant Hill; grandsons, Randy and Mark Burdock; seven great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, William Andrew Bennett; granddaughter, Renae (Tracy) Burdock-Bandy; great-grandchildren, Amy, Lori and Richard Bandy; and siblings, Alfred and Leon Croenne, Adele Richardson and Mary Griffith.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 3300 Easton Blvd, Des Moines with burial following at Laurel Hill Cemetery. There will be a visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street.

Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in loving memory of Roseline.
