Fought in the Spanish Civil War for the Republican faction which supported Communism and in World War Two where he died from wounds at the Battle of Stalingrad.
He was originally buried with other Soviet soldiers in Stalingrad, but in 1948 his remains were dugged up and reburied at the Mamayev Kurgan Memorial.
On 22 August 1956, he was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
