Was Secretary of Guarantee Trust and Safe Deposit Company
John G(J)ay Gilroy, who was secretary of the Guarantee Trust and Safe Deposit Company for twenty-six years, died Tuesday at his home, 2033 North Twenty-second street. He had been ill since last December, having spent most of his time since at various resorts. A widow and three children survive him.
Mr. Gilroy was born in this city April 16, 1846, and educated in the public schools. He left the Central High School in 1862 to enter the pay department of the United States Navy. The next year he served on the Paul Jones in the blockading squadron off Charleston. At the close of the Civil War he was assigned to the Suwanee and he saw service on the Pacific and Asiatic Stations. In 1867 he resigned from the Navy to take a position in the Bank of the Republic of Philadelphia. In 1876 he was elected secretary of the Guarantee Trust and Safe Deposit Company. He was a vestryman in St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Fifteenth street and Girard avenue, for thirty years, and was prominent in the work of the church. He was a thirty-third degree Mason; a past officer in Corinthian Lodge, F. and A. M. and St. John's Commandery, Knights Templar, and at the time of his death was grand treasurer of the Grand Commandery, Knights Templar of Pennsylvania.
The funeral will be held from St. Matthew's Church tomorrow afternoon with private interment in West Laurel Hill Cemetery."
