Wyoming Governor. She gained recognition after being elected as the first governor of any state in the United States. She served from January 5, 1925 to January 3, 1927. She was appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to the post Director of the U.S. Mint from 1933 to 1953. She was the wife of William B. Ross, Governor of Wyoming. Upon the death of her husband, who had been elected Governor in 1922, she was nominated as the Democratic candidate for the unexpired term of the governorship pursuant to the convening of an emergency Democratic State Convention, and defeated her Republican opponent to take her husband's place. She was defeated in the next election. While governor, she encouraged counties to make a budget and stay on it before increasing taxes. She opposed legislation to empower the state bankers' association to appoint state bank examiners, instead backing a measure designed to prevent bank failures while making examining officials responsible to the governor. She was educated in local and private schools prior to marrying her husband.
