Doris Bird was beloved by many in Rye, serving as childrens' librarian at the Rye public library for over 40 years. So admired that a street was named for her and a trip to Europe given as a gift. She lived all her life at the Bird home in the Milton neighborhood, on the banks of Blind Brook, helping to maintain the 180 year old house now known as the Bird Homestead. There was a library annex in the Episcopal chapel next door where she volunteered as a teenager. She assembled a large collection of childrens' books now maintained at the library in her name.
