Charles Luther "Charlie" Sypolt Sr., 80,
of Hagerstown, died Friday, March 30, 2012, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg.

Born Oct. 19, 1931, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Earl Franklin and Goldie Elizabeth (Bond) Sypolt.

He attended Hagerstown High School.

Charles was a veteran of the United States Army, where he served in Korea.

He was a member of Hagerstown VFW Post No. 1936, the Goodwill Athletic Club and a member of the Hagerstown Eagles Club.

Prior to entering the service, Charlie worked for Dixie Mill Works. He went on to work as a glass cutter at Pittsburgh Paint and Glass. He also drove a cab for City Wide Transportation and then retired from Turner Taxi in 1996.

He is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Thompson and husband, Lloyd, of Bunker Hill, W.Va., and Alissa Farrow and husband, Todd; two sons, Charles Sypolt Jr. and wife, Bonnie, and Leland Gross Jr., all of Hagerstown; a sister, Nancy Ganoe of Waynesboro; 12 grandchildren, Christy Stevenson, Daniel Thompson, Lloyd Thompson III, Basil Kuhn III, Daisy Waugh, Hayley Manuel, Dustin Paul, Devin Sypolt, Michael Paul, Sheratee Smith, Christopher Kelly and Shannon Smith; and 20 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Voyles.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 5, 2012, at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery with military honors being accorded by the Maryland National Guard, AMVETS Post 10 and the Antietam Detachment Marine Corps Honor Guards.

Friends will be received one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
