Rev. Dr. Elliott attended Washington & Jefferson College, from which he was graduated in 1867. Then he was graduated from Western Theological Seminary (later known as Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh, PA) in 1870. He was licensed to preach in 1870, and then in 1871 he was ordained to Presbyterian ministry by the Presbytery of Des Moines (Iowa). He was Pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Woodburn, Iowa (1871-1874), after which he took pastorates in Kentucky, Ohio, and then Indiana. In about 1906 he was living in Lafayette, Indiana. He earned his PhD somewhere along the way.
