He was born January 9, 1848 in Schwyz, Canton-Schwyz, Switzerland. In 1854 his family came to the US when he was 6 years old. They landed in New Orleans and came up the Mississippi River and settled near French Village (near Belleville) Illinois. He married Ann Margaret Hoffman on March 5, 1878 in the Baldus home near French Village, Illinois. They were the parents of eleven children: Joseph, George Adolph, Joseph Frank Jr., Margaret Josephine (Maggie), August (Gus), William (Bill) , Edward (Edd), Cora, Fred, Clara Anna and Frank Joseph. Joseph and Margaret died in Independence, Jackson County, Missouri. They are buried together in the Fairview Cemetery.
