Geo. Russell, Libby Prison Vet, Dies Military Funeral Today for Civil War Veteran Closing an eventful life, George W. Russell, a Civil War veteran, aged 83 years answered the final reveille of the Great Captain, passing into peaceful rest Wednesday at 1:25 o'clock at his home on Buckeye avenue. The deceased was born December 5, 1840 at Irondale and later moved to this city where he spent the greater part of his life. At the outbreak of the Civil War when Lincoln issued a call for men, Mr. Russell answered the call, becoming a member of D126, Squadron O. V. I. and served three and one-half years, taking part in the battle at Pat Wilderness, Orber and Spottsylvania and being wounded three times, During one of the battles he was taken captive and placed in Libby prison, from which he escaped. Besides his wife, Mrs. Rebecca Wilson Russell, the deceased is survived by two daughters and one son: Mrs. Homer Rushing of Dover, Ark: Mrs. Louis Teter of Youngstown: and Mr. W. E. Russell of Dennison, also 13 grand children and five great grand children. Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the late home, Rev. H. W. Stewart, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church officiating. Members of the G. A. R. of which he was a member conducted impressive military ritual, also. The remains were interred in Springhill cemetery. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We Have A Lot To Be Thankful For Because George Escaped From Libby Prison.
